테니스를 배우는 코알라를 상상하며 이야기를 짓고 그렸습니다. 개나리부 입상을 꿈꾸는 구력 3년 차 림고가 글을 쓰고, 이제 테니스를 배운지 만 1년이 된 파카가 그림을 그렸습니다. 어느새 이 둘에게 테니스는 취미 이상이 되었습니다. 실화를 바탕으로 한 것처럼 보이지만, 전부 허구입니다.

I imagined a koala learning tennis and wrote the story around it. Rimko, three years into the sport and dreaming of a Gaenari-division win, wrote the text, while Paca, exactly one year into learning tennis, drew the illustrations. Somewhere along the way, tennis became more than just a hobby for the two of us. It may look based on a true story — it's entirely fiction.

연재를 시작하며 : 한 달에 한 번, 책 읽는 사람들을 주제로 그림을 연재합니다. ‘연재’를 하고 싶다는 마음은 오래전부터 품고 있었지만 용기가 나지 않았습니다. 하나의 주제를 깊게 파는 것을 잘 하지 못한다고 생각해서 였는데요. 솔직한 이유로는 금방 질려버려서 그만하고 싶다고 생각할까봐였던 것 같습니다. 책 읽는 사람들을 주제로 정하게 된 것은 우연히 자연스럽게 일어난 일이었는데요. 앙드레 케르테츠의 On Reading이라는 책을 보고 흑백 사진 속 모습을 컬러로 상상해서 그려본 작은 그림이 시작이었습니다. 50여년 동안 무언가를 읽는 사람들을 포착할때마다 찍은 사진들을 모은 책입니다. 책 읽는 사람들을 마주치는 일이 쉽지 않은 요즘이지만 이번 연재를 계기로 열심히 밖을 돌아다녀 읽는 사람들의 모습을 수집해볼 계획입니다.

On Starting This Series: Once a month, I'll be drawing a series about people reading. I'd wanted to start a series for a long time but never had the courage — I didn't think I was good at digging deep into one subject. Honestly, I think I was afraid of losing interest and wanting to quit. Choosing "people reading" as the theme happened naturally, almost by chance. It began with a small drawing — imagining André Kertész's black-and-white photographs from On Reading in color. The book gathers photographs he took over fifty years, each time he caught someone reading. It isn't easy to spot people reading these days, but this series gives me a reason to go out and start collecting those moments.
